These High School sweethearts didn’t follow the ‘norm’ or traditions and protocols surrounding weddings and getting married. After heading off to Toronto for University together, Jason + Iris just decided to get married; there was no proposal, they just decided together and headed off to the courthouse to elope.

This is probably the only wedding I’ll ever shoot where the groom was still a couple months from being legally allowed to drink alcohol, but you would never have guessed because Iris + Jason were both so mature, and you could tell their decision to get married wasn’t made in haste. They’re a power couple in the making.

With Iris’s family still in China, Jason’s family wanted to roll out the red carpet for their new daughter-in-law, so on their summer break between studying pre-law and science, the Kang family with the help of Emerald Events threw a stunning yet casual backyard wedding celebration party.

A few days before the wedding, Jason, Iris and I headed out to Stanley Park where we took a bunch of pre-wedding photos in their wedding clothes. Logistically this was a dream! We were able to schedule the photos right at “Magic Hour”, we weren’t rushed, and there was no schedule to keep to, except to follow the sun.

On the day of the wedding, the entire wedding party and Jason’s family all got ready together in the same house where the wedding was taking place. As the decorators were at work in the backyard, Jason and Iris shared some sushi, the girls helped each other with their hair, and Jason’s mom helped him put on his boutonniere. After taking some group shots in the backyard, we moved to the front yard of Jason’s family home. Iris’s parents weren’t able to make it from China, but her younger brother was there to walk her down the aisle. Jason and Iris re-exchanged vows, but this time in front of all their friends and family, including live streaming to family in China.

The party moved to the backyard where they had a canapé and cocktail reception catered by The Rustic Gourmet. Everything was elegant yet casual. They finished off the evening by performing the Ed Sheeran choreographed “Thinking Out Loud” dance; including the lift! How they found time to practice between their final exams is beyond me!

It was a pleasure to be part of this casual backyard wedding celebration (even though the entire wedding party made me feel incredibly old), and if everyone had a wedding as fun, casual and low stress as this one, I would be one happy wedding photographer.
